PeruVine/PeruDigital is a digital ethnography project based on in-depth research in multiple areas:

  • information about Peruvian festivals (specifically, the Lord of Agony festival in Piura and the Virgin of Candelmas festival in Puno) including their historical and religious significance and the multiple genres involved in festivals (including dance, music, and costumes)
  • research on humanities and social science themes related to the two festivals, including such issues as the history of the serrano (or highlander) stereotype in the Lord of Agony festival and the ways that the figure of the Virgin of Candelmas reveals legacies of cultural contact
  • research on the emerging field of digital ethnography itself, focusing on the theory and practice of representing cultures on the Internet.
