The Turkey Maiden Game

Project Progress and Plans

The project has undergone two phases of development. The first was funded by a UCF In-House Research grant under the direction of Dr. Underberg. Chantale Fontaine served as Creative Director and programmer. Faculty and students in at UCF (mainly but not exclusively in Digital Media) created a pilot project of the game mod, based on the NeverWinter Nights game engine, using a toolset and "hakpaks" (or custom content created and shared online by fans of the game). In addition, undergraduate student Fernando Sosa created 3D models of the Centro Asturiano (a local Spanish mutual aid society) and a cigar factory, based on historical photographs and other documentation. The pilot project consisted of five elaborated environments linked to specific game tasks related to the story: the interior and exterior areas of a casita (or cigar workers' home); the area within and around the Centro Asturiano; and the area within and around the cigar factory.

In phase II, funded by a UCF College of Arts and Humanities Interdisciplinary Research grant, further development of several areas of the game environment was completed, including populating the interior of the Centro Asturiano and the cigar factory, and game debugging took place. In addition, a brief new quest was created related to a historical fire. In phase II Christian Franqui served as Creative Director and Adams Greenwood-Erikson served as lead programmer (assisted mainly by Adam Lenz and Rafael Sanchez). A number of Digital Media students researched and created these 3D models (exterior and interior) based on historical materials such as photographs: in particular, Traci Yeager taught the other graduate students (Amy Van Schaik, Caley Lyles, and Adam Lenz) about using 3D modeling software so they could created models for objects including the large house in the game where the "prince" lives (created by Adam Lenz).
